The makers of “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” were smart to realize one thing: If you’re going to make a feature length film based on the titular “Rocky and Bullwinkle” segment, you might as well make it a whole hog time travel movie. The shows were little history lessons, with the WABAC Machine the mere device to send the canine braniac and his quizzical adoptee back in time. The movie reverses this. It has very little educational value (same with the show, to be honest).

It’s essentially “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” only with more heart. And therein lies the less smart thing about “Mr. Peabody & Sherman”: “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” already exists, and is much more joyous than anything here. Doing it again only with more life lessons is two unimaginative things rolled into one pricey franchise launcher. Here, boy Sherman (voice of Max Charles) takes the (of course) souped-up Wayback Machine for a joy ride, only to accumulate multiple historical personages. Eventually the film starts cribbing from other time travel pictures. Sherman winds up creating multiple time lines, and with them multiple Shermans.
But as soon as it seems “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” may get really loopy and turn into a kiddie “Primer,” it backs off. Director Rob Minkoff (“The Lion King,” “Stuart Little”) makes it looks handsome, but maybe too handsome. He doesn’t have the madcapness to fully exploit a potentially nutty premise. It has the entirety of history at its disposal, but it can’t give Agamemnon (Patrick Warburton), Mona Lisa (Lake Bell) or even Sigmund Freud (Mel Brooks!) anything to do.Then again, it has other more serious concerns to get to. The world at large, it turns out, is sort of freaked that a child is being raised by a talking dog (Ty Burrell, doing a not bad approximation of original voice Bill Scott).
The slight subversiveness of asking America to be more tolerant of (nudge nudge) alternative parenting, unfortunately, comes off as just another obligatory family movie homily. On top of that, Peabody has to learn his own obligatory lesson about being emotionally available to the kid he’s raised as his own.(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) If you ever thought that semi-sincere message-mongering has destroyed many a family picture, the wasted potential of “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” will make you want to build your own time machine and do it right before the sequels screw it up as well.In an early episode of the Adult Swim series Sealab 2021, Stormy and Dr. Quinn find themselves in a time-rip loop. Each jump back 15 minutes in time leads to a new pair of distorted alternate Stormy and Quinns, each more hopelessly idiotic than the last.
In point of comparison (or, rather, in pointed comparison), Mr. Peabody & Sherman spent roughly a dozen years in development, and the moronic, corporate detritus from that long time warp is strewn about like so many improbable history lessons. Directed by Rob Minkoff (who hasn't helmed a fully animated feature since The Lion King 20 years ago), the movie thrusts a pair of third-string supporting players from Jay Ward's Rocky & Bullwinkle universe awkwardly into the present day.(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) Adult audiences will recall Mr. Peabody as not just the smartest dog in the world, but the first earthling to crack the science between time travel. He also dotes over the pedagogic, if not necessarily emotional, upbringing of his adopted human "son" Sherman, who he discovered as a baby one rainy night in an alley.
Ward's cartoons reveled in irony, and they poked holes in propriety, which is one reason they held their spell over the first wave of post-baby boomers in reruns. There was nothing insipid about the relationship between Peabody and Sherman. In fact, their affiliation was frequently jaded and antagonistic,(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) just as their tongue-in-cheek history-lesson segments were irreverently loose with facts and figures, casting understandable aspersions on the entertainment industry's ability to serve as an educational tool. But the 2014 Peabody (voiced by Ty Burrell with just the right amount of haughtiness) is practically an evangelist for the full audio-visual experience, risking any number of Doc Brown paradoxes instead of trusting his charge with, oh, reading a book.
Consequently, poor home-schooled Sherman doesn't have a prayer when he's forced to interact with his own kind at a snooty private academy, where he's bullied by a dead ringer for Brittany Chipette. Sherman bites the girl,(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) instantly putting a relentlessly stern social worker on Peabody's scent.Recasting Peabody and Sherman as potential martyrs persecuted by those espousing traditional views on acceptable family structures instantly dates the entire movie as a product of its time, one hardly lessened by a number of anachronistic "Don't taze me bro" pop-culture references from inside Agamemnon's Trojan Horse. (A sight gag showing troops being expelled from just under the horse's tail more or less defines the movie's level of visual sophistication.)
But, in an odd way, this time-travel adventure is more obviously a victim of its release-date proximity to another era-straddling kids' movie, whose deftness in balancing the entertainment prerequisites of today's kids with the tongue-in-cheek nostalgia only their parents will appreciate makes Mr. Peabody & Sherman look desperate. If only Peabody'd had the foresight to build his time machine out of LEGOs.(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman)The Peabody’s Improbable History shorts, which aired alongside the adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, plainly stated their approach to actual historical events right there in the title. The super-intelligent beagle and his boy Sherman once rescued Ludwig Van Beethoven from the middle of a busy intersection filled with cars—in 19th-century Vienna! Mr. Peabody & Sherman continues that fast and loose relationship with history.
Agamemnon jokes to his Greek soldiers about Achilles hurting his heel from inside the Trojan horse, despite the fact that the infamous injury doesn’t occur until the end of the Trojan War. And Marie Antoinette giggles like a buffoon while stuffing her face with various fancy cakes. But unlike the whimsical,(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) slapstick-driven shorts on which it’s based, this feature-length adaptation adds an obligatory emotional arc that feels at odds with the zany spirit of historical time-travel tales. In a reversal of “boy adopts dog” narratives, Mr. Peabody (Modern Family’s Ty Burrell) discovers the infant Sherman (Max Charles) abandoned in a cardboard box—a rewrite of the Improbable History backstory, which had Peabody rescuing a much older Sherman from bullies. As a successful inventor, scholar, and business icon, Peabody smugly presumes it should be easy for a multitalented creature to raise a child.
On Sherman’s first day of school, he’s bullied by Penny (Burrell’s Family co-star Ariel Winter), prompting an intervention from a child-protection official (Allison Janney) looking to place Sherman in a home with human parents. That leads to an awkward reconciliation dinner with Penny and her parents at the Peabody residence, which quickly devolves into Sherman and Penny gallivanting through time, eventually requiring Peabody’s rescue.(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) Sherman’s historical excursions with Peabody are framed as an overly involved parent attempting to broaden the mind of his young charge. They use the WABAC machine to investigate famous events, but unlike the original cartoon, there’s no clarification that they’re traveling in a “should have been” machine that justifies the kooky bent of the historical figures, from Leonardo Da Vinci (Stanley Tucci) to George Washington (Animaniacs’ Jess Harnell).
Sherman even informs his classmates about apocryphal stories, simultaneously debunking perpetuated historical myths while roving through wildly inaccurate scenarios.Peabody’s air of superiority and stuffy ingenuity permeate much of the film’s humor, which relies on constant punning and Sherman’s blank stares of misunderstanding.(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) But Peabody & Sherman also tries to link the two characters together in a heartfelt father-son tale, a dog unadoptable for his quirks attempting to provide a loving home for a child of similar circumstances. Penny—seemingly thrown into the story to provide a main female character—begins as a bully jealous of the knowledge Sherman has accrued from his father, but once along for the adventure, she morphs into both the object of Sherman’s affection and the “bad influence” who coaxes him out of his shell and drives a wedge between him and a protective Peabody.

It’s a balancing act that never quite feels natural. In trying to attach a moral arc to the story, the filmmakers pull focus from the whimsical disregard for actual events. The animators resist employing Dreamworks’ signature smirk, but many characters have oversized heads and rail-thin limbs,(Download Mr. Peabody & Sherman) their eyes gigantic and their expressions over emoted. Thankfully, when the 3-D action sequences get going—in ancient Egypt, Renaissance Florence, and Troy in particular—most of the problems momentarily melt away. Director Rob Minkoff has both The Lion King and the Stuart Little films on his résumé, which helps explain why Mr. Peabody & Sherman nails its big set pieces while getting dragged down by cloying sentimentality.
For the first two acts, the wacky humor keeps the ancillary emotional plot at bay. But after a twist forces Sherman to break Peabody’s one cardinal rule of time-travel—used to prevent paradoxical self-encounters—the wheels come off.(Watch Mr. Peabody & Sherman Online Full Length) Peabody resorts to characters shouting incoherent technobabble at the problem as the film rises to an explosive finale. (One example: The final action sequence grossly misuses the phrase “terminal velocity.”) This won’t matter to kids occupied by bright colors and whooshing action. But the astutely droll tone of the original shorts only shows up here in fragments.
